Instead of (or at least in addition to) using Twitter, perhaps you can use an open microblogging platform (such as one based on laconica) like identi.ca?

I, and many other advocates of Free software (which Subversion clearly supports), don't like Twitter too much because of their lock in, lack of source available, and lack of accountability.

Using identi.ca is easy to use, supports the Twitter API (so your existing tools work), and can tie in with Twitter (so you don't need to post to both - identi.ca can handle that for you). And if you want, you can even run your own instance, and it will magically federate with the other sites.
